To realize the magnitude of why there should not be the establishment of a Palestinian state, it is important to understand how this Arab population was born from a history of conflict that will only multiple if a state is ultimately created. Despite the fact that a Palestinian state has long been desired, the ever-present distraction of tribal and nation-state loyalty has remained the wedge that continues to defeat such a quest. Arab nationalism is said to be at fault for this inability to form a state; however, there are those who contend there exist a combination of reasons behind this ineffectualness - and downright danger. Not only does it have to do with Western interference and narrow-minded Arab leadership, but it also has a significant amount to do with the way several nation-states uphold their political and social contrarieties (Khalidi, 2007). A considerable number of critics believe that in order to justify a Palestinian state, there must be an end to violence and discord, as well as a move toward specific developmental strategies and away from nationalistic principles (Israeli, 2002). According to David Gompert, author of Helping a Palestinian State Succeed: Key Findings, Palestine can well establish itself as an independent state by addressing each of the following four conditions: security, governance, economic development and social well-being. The extent to which peace and security play integral roles in achieving this objective is both grand and far-reaching; satisfying anything less than all four criteria speaks to a Palestinian presence whereby the quest for establishing independent statehood is little more than a fa?ade for continued conflict.
