money professional basketball players make. The NBA is all but famous for its complaining players who claim they should make more, and yet they are often, according to many, already overpaid. One author notes the most basic and generally agreed upon aspect of this argument, stating, "Some players in the league are not nearly worth the money they make" (Powell , 1997; 37). The following paper examines this reality, arguing that they are overpaid, while answering 6 different questions. Who Gets the Most? While the numbers and individuals may well be different this particular season, here is a taste of who makes what, indicating that some players get astronomical amounts of money! One player, Wesley Person, makes $7,700,000 (Merron, 2005). Eddie Robinson who is with the Bulls makes $6,246,960 (Merron, 2005). Keith Van Horn and Anfernee Hardaway both make $13,500,000 with the Knicks (Merron, 2005). And, Dikembe Mutombo, also with the Knicks, makes $17,894,738 (Merron, 2005). Where Does Their Salary Come From? The most obvious and honest answer to this question is the team owners. It is the team owners who ultimately pay what the player is demanding, if they agree to the price. But, in all honesty we must look at where the team owner is getting his money and where he expects the money to come from. The money comes advertisers who wish to pay to be part of the scene. But, those advertisers only want to pay if they know that their advertisements are reaching the fans, and influencing the fans. And, the fans, in all ultimate analyses, are the ones who are paying.
