In a recent film called The Weather Man, the protagonist was earning a nice six figure salary and was given the opportunity to make over one million dollars per year. There are many other examples of professionals with high profile jobs, who expend little energy, but make a lot of money. If these people do not put much effort into their work, why should they make so much money? There is an ethical dilemma here. People are jealous of the performers who command high salaries. They argue that others who contribute more to society should make more money. The athletes are vastly overpaid. That said, people also praise capitalism as the only way of employing government. They see it as a model for success. It is something that provides incentive for people to work. Under a socialist or communist paradigm, they argue, people would not have the incentive to work. It is also equated with religion and there is a sense that the spirit of capitalism is aligned with Christianity. Still, how is it that these performance artists attain great wealth and others have to struggle to get by? Chass (2002) relays the words of a teacher who believes that athletes are not doing as much as her peers do for society. Teachers are integral to the future as they educate all youngsters. No one knows who these individuals will grow up to be, and the teacher makes a difference in the lives of all her pupils. Why should athletes make more money then?
