were clearly considered to be very sacred structures that were constructed in order to worship and adore God. Two of the most famous buildings are Saint-Sernin in Toulouse and Chartres
Cathedral. The following paper compares the two in relationship to such things as artist, period, function, medium, and cultural content. Saint-Sernin and Chartres Cathedral The construction or
existence of these structures began in "1194 with the construction of Chartres cathedral" (Guisepi, 2002). However, one author notes that Saint-Sernin was built around 1080-1120 (Rice University, Humanities Electronic Studio
Project, 1994). The style of the structures "resembled that of the Romanesque but was more unified because the arms were shorter, the spaces broader, and the walls between the parts
made thinner or entirely removed. Gothic interior spaces, however, did not look at all the same" (Guisepi, 2002). The structural style allowed for more variation and also allowed for the
insertion of windows, a very classic element to the Gothic cathedrals. These windows "were filled with stained glass depicting Biblical scenes and saints. These figures, in deep red and blue
colors, seemed to float above the worshiper like the figures depicted in Byzantine mosaics, but they glowed as daylight beamed through" (Guisepi, 2002). The Chartres Cathedral is a structure
that has always, apparently, been associated with the Virgin Mother. One author notes that "The town of Chartres had been a center for the cult of the Virgin throughout the
middle ages since it possessed a statue of Mary, reportedly carved by St. Luke, as well as the "sacred Tunic," supposedly worn by the Virgin at the time of the
birth of Christ" (Sullivan, 2004). This is supportedc by another who indicates that the pilgrimages to this Cathedral really took off when the church received this particular tunic (Cohen ).
