paining implies, it is a painting of Saint Paul in the process of writing his epistles, or letters. The following paper examines and analyzes this particular painting. Saint
Paul Writing His Epistles The subject matter of this painting is clearly historical, religious, and it depicts a sense of everyday life for the subject of Saint Paul. It is
historical because it composes an action, in every day life for this man, of a historical figure who was alive hundreds of years prior to the painting of this work.
It is religious in nature only because it is a painting of a religious individual, Saint Paul, one of Jesus Apostles. If
the title were not as such the viewer would not really know who it was they were viewing and it would become a painting that depicts nothing more than the
action of a man writing. There is not really any clear indication that the book on the table is a Bible, and no real indication that this man is necessarily
religious. In terms of it being historical, one may assume, without the presence of the title, that he could be a historical figure because the clothing he wears appears simple
in relationship to the 17th century when the painting was created. In light of this information it is clear that the title is paramount to interpreting and understanding the work,
