have become significant contributions to the development of Western culture. For instance, the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas were instrumental in the history of philosophy and supplied the medieval world
with a number of profound insights in the disciplines of ethics, epistemology, and even metaphysics. That is but one example, however, and there are many thousands of other lesser-known texts
with equally illuminating things to say about Christianity. One such text is "On Loving God", written by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, on the topic of mans relationship with God, and
how different forms of love shape the different aspects of that relationship. This paragraph helps the student offer some context for the ensuing analysis. While "On Loving God" is
not incredibly popular outside of scholarly theological communities, Saint Bernard of Clairvaux himself was a rather prominent figure in Christianity at the turn of the 12th century. He was the
most famous membe of the Cistercian order of monks, generally agreed by historians to be the "second founder" of that group, which itself was a well-regarded and well-educated order (Harris,
2001). As an advocate for a strong papacy, he commanded a good deal of influence within the hierarchical structure of the church at his time and was considered by some
to be one of the most powerful men in Europe (Harris, 2001). Despite this, however, Bernard of Clairvaux was not a severe or haughty person; rather, he was generally seen
