a fascinating figure. This paper is a biographical sketch of St. Augustine, dealing with his early life, conversion and writings. Early Life Augustine was born on November
13, 354 at Tagaste, now called Souk-Ahras, in Algeria. (Portalie, 2004). His mother Monica was a Christian and she is a significant figure in Augustines life; his father
Patricius, however, was a pagan (Portalie, 2004). However, Monica was such a model of true Christianity that her husband finally converted to her faith (Portalie, 2004). Augustine
was raised a Christian but deferred baptism until much later in life, a decision which had unexpected consequences. His father wanted to send him to Carthage "to pursue a
forensic career," but it was necessary to first get the means together to send the boy, which meant that he spent his sixteenth year in Tagaste, with disastrous results:
"he gave himself up to pleasure with all the vehemence of an ardent nature" (Portalie, 2004). Apparently he prayed to be delivered from committing these sins of the flesh,
but Augustine lacked "the sincere desire of being heard," so that when he got to Carthage the city seduced him (Portalie, 2004). He fell prey to "the licentiousness of
other students, the theatres, the intoxication of his literary success, and a proud desire always to be first, even in evil" (Portalie, 2004). He became involved with a woman
