leader it is now in third position behind Tesco and Asda, recently acquired by Wal-Mart. The company has always made good use of information as a part of its strategic
development. Thos can be seen looking at the history and the current strategies of the company. The use of information technology is fairly recent and has also been embraced in
terms of the gathering and use of information that is taken and is also seen with the use of the internet and e-commerce in developing the role of Sainsbury
2. The Strategic Role of Information The role of information is seen from the beginning where it was information regarding the target market and the profile of local areas that
was used to create a match between the offering and the needs of the area. The first ever Sainsbury store was opened at 173 Drury Lane, London, in 1869 by
Josh James Sainsbury and May Ann Sainsbury. At the time this was a very poor area of London and the store become popular as it offered low prices for products
of a good quality (Sainsbury, 2006). This initial success leads to more branches opening including Kentish Town, Stepney and Islington. In terms of the information strategy as it is
seen today with the use of information technology there have been several attempts to develop a competitive advantage with the use of information. Technology tools such as Eftpos and sales
based ordering systems were adopted early and the attempt at developing a loyalty scheme with Green Shield stamps was popular, however this was then dropped and the second orange Sainsbury
