Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 5 page paper discussing gun safety features, gun manufacturers and social responsibility. Public concern and promotion by gun safety groups led the Clinton administration to introduce gun safety legislation in 2000 which included the requirement of built-in child safety locks on handguns, ballistics testing on new handguns to aid in solving crimes and additional safety training for those who purchase guns. The legislation was quickly picked up by many states, counties and communities in their efforts to reduce the high rate of handgun deaths in the United States. With the exception of Smith & Wesson, most gun manufacturers stated that they would not be adding additional safety features to their firearms. Smith & Wesson, on the other hand announced that it would be including the addition of several types of safety locks on all of their newly manufactured handguns. Because of this commitment in 2000, Smith & Wesson not only received appreciation from the public in regards to their social responsibility but they also received contracts from many police departments throughout the United States who pledged to use the new Smith & Wesson guns with safety devices. Since that time other manufacturers have also introduced new safety devices for their firearms with the intention of increasing their social responsibility image and offering new safety products which are within the legislation guidelines.
