Empire after its fall. For centuries, the Ottoman Empire succeeded at dominion in what is now the Middle East and Europe. After the fall of that autonomous entity in 1650
and the subsequent breaking up of the empire into smaller and smaller chunks during the succeeding three centuries, Iraq became just another autonomous Arab state functioning on the principle of
oil trade. One of its primary interests was safeguarding Islamic principals, which became, by rote, the interest of the Baath party. Another interest was shared by both, an interest in
taking over the world. This was of particular interest to a member of the party, Saddam Hussein. The Baath party, was started by
"French-educated Arab intellectuals," and like many of the socialist parties that rose in the 1930s, was based in Marxism. (Schneider, 2003, 1180). This was not far from French Ottomon roots,
which had always proposed a world order based in ideals similar to totalitarianism. The Baath party attempted to infiltrate the Arab states with little success until the 1960s when it
made headway in Syria and Iraq. Using the history of the Ottomon Empire as an example, by 1968, the Baath party had completed infiltrated Iraqs ruling political structure, the Revolutionary
Command Council (RCC), of which Saddam Hussein, a military commander, was the chairman. Hussein and party members initiated a political coup
and took over as president of Iraq in 1979. Their goal, to implement the policies of the Baath party in Iraq. Iraq is a democratic state, but following the Baath
