play that speaks of hope in the end. Both stories, however, speak clearly of the theme of sacrifice on the part of women. In Shakespeares play we have the daughter,
Cordelia, who ultimately sacrifices her life for her father. In Ibsens play we have the primary woman, Nora, sacrifice herself for most of the play and then turn the tables
and make the decision to sacrifice herself no more, and in doing so sacrifices her family. The following paper examines the theme of sacrifice in both stories separately and then
examines the two together. In both stories we see these women sacrifice almost everything, and in some cases everything, for their family and their loved ones, something that was socially
expected in the time frames in which the plays were written. King Lear In the play King Lear the king has two daughters who are very different. One
will ultimately tell her father anything she thinks he wants to hear so that she gains in power. She plots against her father cares nothing for him. The other daughter,
Cordelia, is devoted to her father but will not lie to him. She becomes the scapegoat and her father sees her as a devious young woman who is out to
do him wrong. She is all but banished and ends up marrying into wealth and power in another region of the continent. Still she sides with her father and desires
that he knows she was always loyal to him. She has no chance to prove this to him until the end when she returns and he sees that he
