The truth is, when it comes to IT methodologies and processes, there are several ways in which the CEO and company can go. Tom Welch, of the Project Managers Home Page, introduces several methodologies that can go into sytems planning. These include project management (with the steps of initiation, planning, execution, control and closure); process improvement (defining baselines/benchmarks; selecting the problem focus, understanding value streams, organizational structure and workflows) and application software methodologies (system/services acquisitions, implementation planning, product acceptance, customization of the product, training and transition to the product and then evaluation following implementation) (Welch, 2004). When it comes to the overall systems development life cycle, however, the various aspects of the phases include project selection, feasibility study, analysis/requirements definition, systems/software design, documentation and unit testing, systems testing, and operation and maintenance (Drewry, 2001). Dewry and others point out, however, that other methodologies have been developed to help make both the analysis and design stages more manageable and customized for the company in question. Some of the methodologies pointed out include STRADIS, IE, or information engineering, structured systems analysis and design (SSADM) methodologies and soft systems methodology (Drewry, 2001). Drewry also points out that computer systems are little more than models of the real world, but they are simply abstracts of the complexity of the real world -- through systematic modeling techniques, the target systems can be put on paper, and from there, they help develop the adequate ...
