of symbolism. The use of objects, ideas, actions, or even the structure of the poem lend themselves to suggesting certain ideas without the use of a lot of extra words.
John Donnes work, The Canonization and Isabella Gardners Collage of Echoes are both good examples of symbolism. John Donne wrote during the seventeenth century. He was a minister at one
point and this spiritual nature can be seen in much of his poetry. The Canonization offers more reinforcement toward Donnes religious background. The word canonized is a word that is
usually reserved for saints in the Catholic Church. However, a shocking first line greets the reader when he writes: "For Godsake hold your tongue, and let me love"(Roberts, Jacobs 861).
Some of the strongest symbols can be found in the third stanza where Donne focuses on the fact that love can be an unorthodox religion to some. The symbols
he uses are that of the eagle and the dove, which he uses to describe the relationship between the man and woman in the love affair. For example, the eagle
is typically associated with the imagery of male strength and the dove, that of female purity. According to the metaphysical beliefs that he espoused, then, these two images are representative
of the halves being made whole in the combination of the two lovers coming together. Birds figure highly in this poem, as the Phoenix is the next bird to arrive
