a feminist, Sylvia Plaths Bell Jar also has broad applications to other facets of society. Her observations as regards the fig tree, early on in the novel, can as easily
be applied to the political arena and the governments war policies. The title of the novel, the Bell Jar, takes its cue from the type of jars used by scientists
to display various subjects under study, such as an oddity of nature, or to create a vacuum. In the novel, the bell jar comes to symbolize the vacuum where Esther
cant breathe and lives a lifeless existence. As regards the modern world, it becomes obvious with hindsight that once on is in a bell jar situation, one becomes cut off
from reality...a vacuum. This bell jar effect can be said to have happened in Vietnam, and often. Communications were not good and intelligence was not dependable. As a result
many platoons became renegade, slaughtering entire villages regardless of affiliation. The distortion caused by living in the bell jar caused many who were decent men, to lose touch with reality
and as a result many lost their lives. Likewise, a bell jar effect takes effect when those in charge do not have a real idea of what is at stake
and have fail to have a clear cut goal. Todays present situation in Iraq typifies this Bell Jar Effect. The goals were specific when the United States troops and their
allies went into Iraq: Find Sadaam and his group and remove them from a position of power. Having achieved this objective many are now wondering why soldiers still remain in
the Middle East. One can possibly see the Bell Jar Effect taking effect in that there is a distorted sense of purpose and it has served to isolate the United
