languages of culture which speak to the changes, the mindsets and the various aspects of life during certain periods of history. The clothing of many time periods offer insight into
the prevailing beliefs at the time. As such, then, one can tell a great deal about the Swingin Sixties in London just by the fashions. Consider what was going on
in Europe during the sixties. Finally, England was beginning to recover from World War II and economically was better off than it had been before. However, the older generation remembered
the war and its effects and so this great disparity between the generations opened up. The choices in music, art, and political outlooks were separated by a giant chasm that
also included the way that the younger generation chose to dress. A good example would be Mary Quant. Mary Quant introduced the world to the mini-skirt, though by all
rights, she was not the creator of the style(The 1960s Mini, 2004). However, she did improve upon the idea and it was her designs that took the world by storm.
What this type of skirt symbolized and represented was the sexual statement of the women of the time. They were beginning to make strides in womens rights. For many years
womens opportunities were quite limited. Secondly, the miniskirt also made the suggestion that the newer generation were not going to hide behind rhetoric of the past. They were daring,
bold and willing to dare to reveal more about themselves. The miniskirt was a direct result of the rejection of the long pencil skirts or the long pleated skirts of
the fifties. The hairstyles of the day were also a bold statement. No longer was the hair being worn long, but rather a bobbed cut was favored(Twiggy 2004). This
