The Miracle Woman, his protagonists seem to be facing some of the same major issues. These issues make them face very real circumstances which precipitate inward changes as well. The
theme of innocence lost or of innocence manhandled in a deeply selfish and brutal world exist in most of these films, as well, and would seem to be crying their
message every chance they get. "I dont think Ive ever been so thrilled in my whole life, and that Lincoln Memorial! Gee Whiz! And Mr. Lincoln, there he is. Hes
just lookin right straight at ya as you come up those steps. Just, just sitting there like he was waiting for somebody to come along."-- Senator Smith.(Mr. Smith Goes to
Washington, 2002). This speech by Jimmy Stewarts character, Mr. Smith, is the epitome of Capras leads in his films. Idealistic, believing that they can make a difference, they plunge headlong
into circumstances that the audience knows will be their undoing unless they can find an ally, or toughen up. It is with almost perverse curiosity that viewers watch what they
suspect will already happen in the dismantling of a perfectly good and just man in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. In many ways, though they know he brings it on
himself because of his innocence, in many ways they begin to feel protective of the character, in the same type of way that a parent is protective of a child
that they know is not as worldly or experienced. In one of the more memorable scenes from the film, Mr. Smith
