this play is more a contemporary comedy than a farce, though many have billed it as such. One situation, a myriad of possibilities. This is what happens when boy meets
girl. In David Ives short one act play two people meet at a small caf? and have coffee together. The social etiquette that is applied and reapplied, done and undone
is mesmerizing and at the same time humorous as the audience commiserates with the situation they both find themselves in. Bill and Betty, both in their late twenties SETTING:
A caf? table, with a couple of chairs. Betty, reading at the table. An empty chair opposite her. Bill enters. Bill: Excuse me. Is this chair taken? Betty: Excuse
me? Bill: Is this taken? Betty: Yes it is. Bill: Oh. Sorry. Betty: Sure thing. (A bell rings softly)(Sure Thing). In order for this play to be considered a
farce, certain criteria must be met. From this opening sequence one can see that it is not a farce. For example, in a farce, most of the situations and improbable,
such as Don Quixote and his tilting of Windmills(Definitions). In this story, however, two people are simply having a drink of coffee in a neighborhood caf?. This event is neither
extraordinary or improbable. Therefore, based on this criteria of a farce, Sure Thing, does not meet the requirements. In addition, a farce is often loaded with satire which is broad
