is little doubt that todays supply chain is becoming very complex and multifaceted. This is a result of consistent outsourcing, contract manufacturing and, of course the big "g" of globalization.
In short, rather than a direct path from raw materials to market as it once was, logistics can detour from those raw materials into a myriad of different suppliers and
vendors, before coming to a cohesive whole, which is then shipped off to a variety of markets. Sunsweet Growers, a California dried-fruit
producer, is a company that struggled with its logistics - for one thing, the companys access to raw materials (the fruit, for one), is limited by a lot of things,
such as the network of growers and weather (Upton and Singh, 2007). If there is a great deal of supply, for example, Sunsweet needs to manage sales and production to
properly utilize the crop (Upton and Singh, 2007). If, on the other hand, there is limited supply of a particular fruit, Sunsweet must somehow meet the demand, even without the
