Islam the major religion of the state (Country Profile: Sudan, 2009). Interestingly enough, however, the country has a large population that is non-Arab-speaking and non-Islamic, and its this part of
the population that has rejected repeated attempts by the government to impose Islamic Sharia law on the entire country (Country Profile: Sudan, 2009). Sudan is the largest country on the
African continent, and has a population approaching 40 million people. Much like other Islamist regimes ruled by British colonialism, Sudan has
struggled consistently since its independence from Great Britain in 1956 (Sudan, 2009). Just two years after attaining independence from Britain, General Abbud led a military coup against the civilian government
that had been elected earlier in 1958 (Timeline, Sudan, 2009). But disruption seems to be part of this country; in 1881, it
revolted against the Turco-Egyption administration (Timeline, Sudan, 2009). In 1899, Sudan came under joint rule between British and Egypt, but unrest seemed to be the norm, even while under this
joint rule Since its time of independence, the country has been involved in two civil wars - the second war, along with famine, meant the displacement of more than four
million people and two million deaths (Sudan, 2009). The good news for the country was peace talks between 2002-2004, and the
signing of several accord and agreements (Sudan, 2009). However, in recent years, a separate conflict, involving Darfur, on the western edge of the country, broke out in 2003 and has
