A new leader is hurriedly replaced and all seems to go well, at least for a little while. Then things start to fall apart, little by little. Activities arent being
managed as well. Employees are becoming resentful, pining away for the "old days" under the other leader. The new leader doesnt have a clue, and continues throwing out ideas and
plans with no rhyme or reason. The ultimate result is either a huge drop in profits and a struggling company (such as
what happened to Apple Inc. in the 1990s and Dell Inc. in the 2000s when both leaders stepped down) or a general malaise in the company, leading to high turnover
and absenteeism and low productivity. The irony of both Apple Inc. and Dell Inc. is they had succession plans - well, sort
of. Apple CEO Steve Jobs was ousted, so there was no succession plan there. But Michael Dell of Dell Inc. did have a leader waiting in the wings. The problem
with both Dell and Apple, however, were that the leaders werent really looked upon as leaders. This was part of the reason both company founders had to return to run
their companies. In this paper, the writer has been asked to consider a succession plan for his particular company, which is an aviation
company. But to consider succession planning, its first necessary to know what it is, why its necessary, and its benefits. What is Succession Planning?
