together local curriculum to specific, educational standards. While the book is partly a "how to" manual, it also brings up some interesting questions; including questions about the standards themselves, who
specifically is assessing which standards (and how) and if those standards are actually effective in todays educational system. The answer here is no - if they were effective, we wouldnt
be having the problems were currently having with the educational system. Calling most of todays curriculums a "hodgepodge of individual initiatives knit
together by collective good intentions," the authors point out that there seems to be little synergy when it comes to piecing the educational material, the meetings and the students together.
This is because most standards are written for each subject area by experts who are focusing only on one area of the curriculum.
Because educators arent working with proper data to guide decisions, the authors note that what happens is inconsistent student performance. Furthermore, enforcing further standards simply isnt the way to
go - at least, unless those standards are enforced at ALL levels, from teacher to superintendent. Standards dont matter much, the authors point out, unless teachers can "take . .
. ownership of them." And in order to do that, the teachers and administrators must ask some tough questions about standards and what the purpose of them might be.
