Though Beowulf is certainly not everyones cup of Old English tea, what Beowulf tends to show historians is a brief glimpse into the Anglo-Saxon culture, including the social life, government, family structure, warfare, and even a bit of politics as well as literary devices. More than an epic tale of bravery, this piece is the oldest surviving work of literature in British history. In the first episode, the attack of Grendel, the monster, occurs. This and the ensuing third and fourth sections introduce both Beowulf and Grendel and chronicle their initial assessment of one another. The Queen also has her say on the matter. Historically speaking, what these sections serve to do is show the importance of family ties and the feudal state which existed. The allegiances are shown to be held for the ruling lord, not to a persons avocation necessarily. As is shown by the character of the Queen in her speech, kingdoms remained strong only as long as the warrior King and Queen were strong. Therefore, it is not out of patriotism or loyalty that Beowulf meets Grendel, but out of family ties and vows of allegiance to the Queen. Even Grendels mother gets into the act. These sections give a bit of foreshadowing to the events which will be forthcoming, and as such show how early storytellers were employing the use of irony and foreshadowing of events.
