an automatic key to a successful job in the workplace. In this day and age, however, not only is college not
necessarily going to get a good job, the student in question is likely going to take a circuitous route to his or her education, rather than going through a straight
four-year line. He/she might take a year off in an internship both to earn money and to gain job experience. He/she might obtain same credits through a junior or community
college before moving on to a regular college. Some might opt out of traditional college altogether and consider distance learning, via the Internet, as the way to go.
The difficulty, however, is that the system of tracking such students isnt federal -- its mostly state and municipal. And not all states really
have such a system. Given that, its difficult to determine if, indeed, education is truly helping the student today. Its also difficult, as a result, for the government to determine
where educational resources can best be distributed because the results are so skewed. Its for this reason that the National Center for
Education Statistics has suggested to Congress the concept of the unit record system as a way to track a students progress as he or she moves through the labyrinth of
higher education. A specific system in place, with specific metrics and variables, goes the theory, can pull specific data from each and every student to better monitor his/her track and
determine if the U.S. higher education system is, indeed, doing the job it needs to do in training tomorrows workers. However, whenever
