The authors believe that a well-crafted business plan should actually tell a story of the business, and why it will benefit society, the stakeholders and, of course, the founders (Longenecker et al, 2005). But sometimes, investors dont want to look at pages upon pages of information about the business. They want a simple introduction to the company -- and from that introduction, theyll determine if they want more information. A short business plan is ideal for such a purpose. A short business plan, also known as a "short-form business plan" is a quick overview of the company, its market and its product (AllBusiness.com, 2008). Its used to introduce a company to potential investors, lenders and even employees -- and if these parties are interested, it can be followed up with a more comprehensive business plan (AllBusiness.com, 2008). Whether the business plan be a standard one or the short-form variety, Longenecker and his colleagues suggest that, when considering the content of a business plan, that the business owner think about the opportunity, rather than diving into financials, marketing and management. By defining the opportunity, the remaining content will more or less write itself (Longenecker et al, 2005). The other aspect these authors believe should be examined carefully are scenarios. In other words, not only what could go right, but what could go wrong as well (Longenecker et al, 2005). Granted, its important to put a positive face on a business plan. But a person reading the plan will want to be certain that the business owner is prepared for all contingencies, the good, the bad and the ugly.
