provide an important service -- theyre responsible for dealing with an unusual population; of caring for this population, making sure its kept out of the mainstream, and in many cases,
training members of the population for rehabilitation back into mainstream society. Along these lines, this paper will examine some of the literature pertaining
to teamwork and strategic planning of correctional facilities. When it comes to facilitating teamwork, Corcoran (2005) begins his article with a definition
of culture, noting that its "defined as the values, assumptions and beliefs that correctional staff hold in common" (p. 24). Why is such a definition important? When it comes to
any kind of teamwork or strategic planning, knowledge of a culture, or what binds a correctional staff together, is essential for knowing how the institution will behave and how change
can be integrated. Corcoran also points out that many a prison cultures culture tends to be that of fear -- but fear can be changed to hope (p. 24).
The example used were prisons who had reported incidences of inmate violence, excessive use of force, discrimination, absenteeism, staff sexual misconduct and a high
rate of staff turnover (Corcoran, 2005). These are issues facing almost any prison facility today, and need to be addressed for a successful organization.
