and save their money. The retail segment is the hardest hit in this situation, as people are out shopping for the basics, and doing so less often than in the past. Getting customers into the store is a major issue faced by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and competitor Target Corp. and CostCo. In this paper, well examine the issues faced by these companies, determine at lease five strategies used by them, and then explain how these can be brought into other organizations for similar impact. In addition to the issue of a souring economy, the other issue facing these companies is competition - not just competition from each other, but from other sources as well. The Internet, for example, has become a large competitive force, and unless its harnessed, can drive someone out of business. In Wal-Marts case, there is also opposition and resistance from communities in whatever area the stores try to enter (Datamonitor (c), 2008). On Targets side, there is a question of low consumer confidence, due to low consumer confidence in the economy (Datamonitor (b), 2008). And all three companies, as mentioned above, are being threatened by the sub-prime fall out (Datamonitor (c), 2008). Costco is in a somewhat different boat, being a warehouse-type of retail center. Costco is facing very strong competition from national and regaionl retailers and wholesalers - Wal-Marts Sams Club among that competition (Datamonitor (a), 2008).
