In this paper, weve been asked to determine a major strategic issue this company faces, and to determine some alternatives by examining the competition. Though Fords strengths include strong engineering capabilities, an extensive dealer network and high employee productivity, there are weaknesses that include poor financial performance and cash flows (Ford Motor Company, 2009). The major strategic issues faced by this company also include a continued sluggish economy in both North America and Europe and intense competition (Ford Motor Company, 2009). The competition is what we will address in this paper. The auto manufacturing industry has always been a competitive one, but in recent decades, the "Big Three" of Detroit (Ford, along with Chrysler Motor Corp. and General Motors Company) have been battling foreign competition, with goods coming in from Japan (Toyota, Nissan), Germany (Mercedes, BMW) and Korea (Hyundai). Furthermore, the collapse of the U.S. economy didnt help the Detroit three; though Ford was in somewhat better financial shape then its competition, it also has struggled with legacy pension costs and other issues that bogged down the industry in the United States. What does it take for an automaker to get ahead in a very competitive market? In analyzing competitor Toyota Motor Corp.s strengths, we can see that a focus on R&D activities, a strong distribution network and sustained brand recognition are all keys to its strength (Toyota Motor Corporation, 2010).
