go round. It is more than possible, given an authors biography, to see the influence of his/her life in their works. Such is the case with John OHara in his work, Straight Pool. The title of this short story is deceptive. Shooting straight with someone (straight pool) means that you are telling the truth. The main protagonist is deceiving himself in many ways. His ultimate problem he says is that his wife cries too much and is afraid that he talks about her behind his back. He ridicules her accusations by doing just that: he talks about her to his friend, Jack McMorrow. His actions and his conversation expose him for the hypocrite that he is. "Youre going down there to talk about me. Youre going down there to talk about me to Jack McMorrow," she said. "No, I wasnt," I told her. I said maybe Id shoot a game with you, but that I wasnt going to talk about her to you, and that was the last time I was down here"(Charter,OHara 33). OHara grew up in the small town of Pottsville in Pennsylvania. He more than likely shot pool at the local pool hall and overhead his share of men talking about their wives nagging them at home. Given that he wrote many of his works between the fifties and seventies, it was a certainty that the independence and equality that women were demanding were a constant source of conversation at the local pool halls and barbershops.
