pregnant women. While many STDs are curable, there is no cure for viral STDs. The impacts of STDs, both viral and bacterial, are not limited to the woman
herself but, unless appropriate interventions are made, have a high probability of infecting the fetus as well. The fetus can be exposed to the disease in utero via transplacental
passage, intranatally, postnatally and also during childbirth. Fortunately, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risks of a fetus becoming infected. While the specifics of
these steps vary according to the particular disease and circumstances of the pregnancy, there are several considerations that are shared with these cases.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (2009), sexually transmitted diseases affect an astounding percentage of pregnancies every year. Bacterial vaginosis is the more common of these diseases affecting
1,080,000 pregnancies yearly (CDC, 2009). Herpes simplex virus 2 is second in prevalence affecting some 880,000 pregnancies yearly (CDC, 2009). Trichomoniasis ranks number three with an estimated 124,000
cases among pregnant women per year (CDC, 2009). The fourth most prevalent STD affecting pregnant women is Chlamydia (CDC, 2009). It wreaks its toll on 100,000 pregnancies per
year (CDC, 2009). Gonorrhea and Hepatitis B are less common culprits among pregnant women, respectively affecting 13,200 and 16,000 pregnancies every year (CDC, 2009). Interestingly, Syphilis takes a
considerable lesser toll on yearly pregnancies and affects less than 1,000 pregnant women yearly (CDC, 2009). HIV, in comparison, affects an estimated
