conjunction with an evaluation of safety training for the Infrastructure Department of Irish Rail. As such, this paper will offer evaluation of training based on Donald Kirkpatrick and John
Phillips as well as other literature pertaining to the industry. In addition, the paper will also focus on certain ways to present data once it is collected.
Donald Kirkpatrick and John Phillips During the late 1950s, sociologists Donald Kirkpatrick created a four-level model to help evaluate training programs.
Although training program evaluation had been in existence prior to that time, Kirkpatrick was among the first to actually provide comprehensive breakdown of such evaluation.
Kirkpatricks four-model theory of training evaluation is as follows. Measuring reaction, which means obtaining feedback from participants and encouraging
them to describe how they felt about aspects of the program (Kirkpatrick, 1998). Measuring learning, which quantifies the learning that takes place
by a surveying and measuring increased knowledge, improved skills and even changes in attitude (Kirkpatrick, 1998). Measuring behavior, which helps gauge behavior
changes resulting from the training program (Kirkpatrick, 1998). Measuring results, which helps researchers actually determine and quantify final results that occur from
the training program (Kirkpatrick, 1998). While Kirkpatricks model focused on the value of training, colleague John Phillips extended the Kirkpatrick model further
by adding a fifth model -- namely, analyzing how the training program has impacted a companys return on investment (Setaro, 2002). In this case, the question asked involves whether the
