on to deliver his annual State of the Union address. Much of the nation, it can be said, simply disregard the rhetoric of political speeches. But this time it was different. This time, America was about to go to war, and most were seeking answers to the problems that now confronted the country. Bushs answer: The State of Our Union Has Never Been Stronger. The President opened with this remark, which not only served to bolster and rally those who were already beginning to waver in their resolve, but to comfort those who were afraid America would simply forget the devastation the September 11 attacks had taken on them personally. He said: "We last met in an hour of shock and suffering. In four short months, our nation has comforted the victims, begun to rebuild New York and the Pentagon, rallied a great coalition, captured, arrested, and rid the world of thousands of terrorists, destroyed Afghanistans terrorist training camps, saved a people from starvation, and freed a country from brutal oppression"(Bush, 2002). He went on to assure the American public that immediate results from the initial response from American and Allied troops had already begun in the areas of relief for women and children in Afghanistan, and had shut down many of the known terrorist camps that had been tolerated for too long. Bush seemed driven to impress upon the public that swift and immediate justice had been served to the perpetrators of this high crime against humanity. Next, Bush began to outline the objectives of Operation Enduring Freedom. Firstly, he stated, that the goal would be to crush and destroy all known terrorist operations, not only in Afghanistan, but in other areas such as the Philippines and in Somalia.
