efforts of the 1970s and 1980s, we run into a problem in which the target market isnt certain what it is we are - a tool company, a do-it-yourself home
improvement company or a tool company that serves only the professional and industrial markets. This is likely why the top lines continue to be stagnant, despite former Stanley chairman Richard
Ayers 4 X 4 efforts of the mid-1990s. Because of this, I believe the value discipline primary needs to focus on customer
intimacy. Its important that we woo our customers back, that we understand their needs and wants, and then try to ensure that our products can perhaps help them in that
arena. An understanding of the customer will help us develop the products they are likely to buy. The value discipline secondary should focus
on product leadership. Stanley is in very good shape, in many ways. Stanley is a brand that many people recognize. Weve been around for a long time. The problem is,
while being around, weve fragmented in our attempts to diversify. This means we have a bunch of separate companies under the Stanley umbrella, rather than one Stanley company with different
