to reach those stars and planets, to theorize on the origins of the universe and in doing so, determine mans place in it. Spectroscopy has been around since the time
of is a relatively new field of study, but one which shows great promise in assisting mankind with some of its most ancient of questions: Do planets exist out of
our solar system? Are we alone in the universe? Ostensibly, it was Isaac Newton who developed the first spectrometer in the sixteen hundreds. Newton observed that a rainbow could be
recreated by taking the white light from the sun and dispersing it into a continuous series of colors. This series of colors he called the spectrum. The first spectroscope had
a small aperture which defined the light beam, a lens to collect it, then a glass prism which dispersed it(Kline 1985). A screen was attached so one could view the
resulting spectrum. When one considers everything that exists, one can see that there is order in its construction and arrangement. Newton
must, too, have determined this and drawing from the physical properties which he could observe, he was able to theorize about the characteristics of an object in outer space. His
theories on planetary motion, alone, have enabled man to build space ships and travel to the stars; stars, ironically enough, that he would never fully see given that telescopes were
so poor during his day and age. Mathematics was the key, Newton discovered. Using mathematical formula, he was able to explain the workings of the universe, formulating laws of
motion and gravity. These laws explain, in detail, how objects move when a force acts upon them. The ideas he held in respect to the movement of objects was put
