create something unique, whether it be a product, service or way of doing business. In this paper, well investigate two such companies: Southwest Airlines, headquartered in Dallas, TX, and Semco,
headquartered in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Founded in the mid-1960s, Southwest Airlines has managed to fight off every move by competitors to put
it out of business, and has weathered a variety of economic downturns. Using its point-to-point system (as opposed to the typical hub-and-spoke systems used by most airlines), as well as
having the philosophy that using only one airline (the Boeing 737) would save costs while providing no-frills service that nonetheless delivers. Southwest Airlines has little bureaucracy or hierarchy and is
a huge believer in employee empowerment; the companys motto is "Were a company of people, not planes" (Child 396). Because of this philosophy, the company hasnt had to fire anyone,
even in the wake of September 11 (Child 396). Southwest is also a huge proponent of employee education, training and learning (Bingham
and Galagan 32). Southwest prides itself on being a great place to work - with the belief that employees come first (Bingham and Galagan 32). Its always been believed that
if the employees are happy and content, that happiness and contentment will trickle down to the customers. This is in direct contrast to most companies, who believe in putting customers
first, sometimes ahead of employees. Southwest also expects its leaders to develop people, and to work with them (Bingham and Galagan 33).
In all, though people are expected to work hard at Southwest Airlines, its also a fun place to work (Bingham and Galagan 36). A sense of humor is something that
