no change fees and friendly service. The air carrier compares well to the competition. But do the companys mission statement, vision and objectives fulfill the criteria of effective ones? Lets
take a look. A glance at the companys website tells us the mission, which is " . . . dedication to the highest
quality of customer service, delivered with a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride and company spirit" (About Southwest, 2011). Along these lines, the companys goals and objectives include high quality
customer service and safe, efficient travel. Whats interesting to note, however, is that there is no specific vision statement on the website
(though one consultant indicated the companys vision statement was to "expand our locations both domestic and overseas by being the largest and most profitable airline company to achieve both short-
and long-haul carriers efficiently and with low cost"). But the website focuses a great deal on "Southwest Citizenship" and the "Southwest Way," which features the "warrior spirit," "a servants heart"
and a "Fun-LUVing Attitude", with LUV being used, as this is how SWA is known on the stock market (About Southwest, 2011).
Were able to pry a little more from the companys recent annual report, which dedicates a great deal of copy to employees (providing a stable work environment with opportunities for
learning and personal growth); communities (to be the "hometown airline of every community we serve" and to provide "involvement, service, and caring to make those communities better places to live
and work"); stakeholders (a sustainable future to promote balances between employees, communities, the environment and financial stability) and finally, the planet (to be a "good environmental steward . . ."
