1970s, with the plan to link Texas cities together at a lower cost than what traditional airlines charge. These days, Southwest Airlines flies to 70 cities in 35 states (Daniels,
2011). In early 2011, SWA acquired AirTran Holdings (parent company of AirTran Airways) in 2011 for about $3.2 billion (Daniels, 2011). The AirTran acquisition means that SWA has access to
more airports in the Eastern and Southeastern United States, as well as to international destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico (Daniels, 2011). During
its 40 years of existence, SWA has bolstered traveler loyalty through its low airfares, no-frills service and customer-friendly personnel. Most of the
carriers flights are less than two hours, and planes typically land at smaller airports to both avoid congestion at the larger hubs, and to avoid the costs associated with larger
airports (such as hangar costs, etc) (Daniels, 2011). The mission of Southwest is fairly straightforward: The airline is dedicated to "the highest quality
of customer service, delivered witih a sense of warmth, friendliness, individual pride, and company spirit" (About Southwest, 2011). Along those lines, the company expects its employees to abide by three
things through the Southwest Way: A warrior spirit, a servants heart and a fun-LUVing attitude (LUV is the stock symbol under which the company trades) (About Southwest, 2011).
There has been praise for this plucky airline; for the fact that its executives regularly come into the trenches to be on the front line
of customer service, and that there is plenty of room for advancement. SWA is also one of the airlines that has a good relationship with its unionized employees.
