Launched during the late 1960s, Southwest Airlines is a short-haul, domestic passenger air carrier (Gilmer, 2010). Known as the "no-frills" airline, Southwest customers know
they will not get much in the way of frills (i.e., meals, though beverages are offered) and rarely will they have a direct flight to their destinations. Customers of SWA
do know, however, that theyll get a flight with a lot of friendly professionals as well as a low-cost fare (Gilmer, 2010). Southwest Airlines runs a streamlined operation by flying
only one type of plane - the Boeing 737. Using just one aircraft means costs are saved when it comes to maintenance and training issues (Gilmer, 2010).
Though SWA has managed to do very well in a turbulent industry, the point here is that the industry IS turbulent, and is filled with all
kinds of legal, political and environmental pitfalls. Legal Environment Though ostensibly "deregulated," the airline industry in the United States and elsewhere is filled
with a variety of governmental rules and regulations. In the United States, for example, airline companies operate under the auspices of the Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees airlines and operations,
ranging from what airports air carriers can fly to, to required aircraft maintenance. The penalties can be problematic for not obeying government mandates. SWA, in fact, ran into some issues
