launch and maintenance by flamboyant leader Herb Kelleher. This paper will be presented in two parts. The first part provides an overview, challenge and proposed solutions for the case study
in hand. The second part will answer certain study questions about leadership style. The name of the case study, incidentally, is "Southwest Airlines:
How Herb Kelleher Lead the Way." Overview Almost from day one of its launch in 1971, Southwest Airlines experienced year after year of
profitability, especially in the period from 1989 through 1993, during which most of the largest airlines lost billions. The airline continued profitable through 2002 (when it had operating revenues of
$5.5 billion), despite the fact it flies smaller jets to only 58 cities in 30 states. One way in which this happens is
through a "no-frills, short-haul" philosophy. The airline doesnt either assign or sell tickets through the standard ticketing agency used by travel agents. The only "food" served on board are peanuts,
pretzels and other small snacks. Employees are also key to Southwests strategies - the company treats employees and their ideas with respect. Furthermore,
all senior level managers and executives are expected to get out in the field to talk with employees. Added to all of this,
humor is expected to be used while at work by all employees. Kelleher, in fact, notes that what he looks for in employees are people with sense of humor, followed
by people who "have to excel to satisfy themselves and who work well in a collegial environment." In other words, a good attitude is essential. Also important for this company
