the culture (Kotter, 1996). In the book Nuts! Southwest Airlines Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success. authors Freiberg and Freiberg point
out a corporate culture thats far different from the traditional, staid, hierarchal structure. On the one hand, the Southwest corporate culture is one of discipline and pride (Freiberg and Freiberg,
1996). On the other, the corporate culture is one that encourages creativity, thinking outside the lines and acting fast while thinking small (Freiberg and Freiberg, 1996). Whats interesting to note
about Southwests personnel policy is that it disdains "industry professionals" (with the possible exception of pilots, of course). What the company looks for is attitude -- if the attitude is
creative, professional and a little crazy, Southwests thought is to hire the person, then train for the essential skills later (Freiberg and Freiberg, 1996).
The deviation from the norm has led to many innovations from the airline -- such as point-to-point flights, no-frills flying (in other words, disdaining meals and passing out
nuts and drinks instead) and even a change in clothing. Rather than uniforms, SWA attendants and pilots dress casually, in polo shirts and casual button-downs (Freiberg and Freiberg, 1996). Despite
the deviation from the norm and the zany behavior both in the corporate office and on flights, Southwest Airlines has had one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry
