NYSE under the symbol LUV. The company is best known for its short-haul, high-frequency, point-to-point flights throughout the United States (Southwest Airlines Investor Relations, 2010). The company started service in 1971 flying three Boeing 737 aircraft between Dallas, San Antonio and Houston (Southwest Airlines Investor Relations, 2010). Southwest Airlines today operates more than 500 Boeing 737 aircraft in 68 cities (Southwest Airlines Investor Relations, 2010). In recent years, Southwest Airlines has been able to lift restrictions of the Wright Amendment, which prohibited from flying its planes from Love Field near downtown Dallas to anywhere except five states contiguous to Texas. These days, Southwest offers direct flights to Kansas, Tennessee and New York, and by 2014, will be able to fly anywhere in the country from Dallas Love Field, which is the citys "urban" airport. Glancing at the financial information for this company, we see that operating revenues for 2008 were at $11 billion, up from the 2007 figure of $9.8 billion (Annual Report, 2009). Operating expenses increased however, to $10 billion in 2008 from $9 billion the year before (Annual Report, 2009). This ended up leaving net income of $178 million and a net margin of 1.6% (2007 net income was $645 million, with a net margin of 6.5%) (Annual Report, 2009). Like many companies, Southwest Airlines has suffered from the recession and has seen its operating margins and net income decline. Furthermore, the increase in fuel costs has also taken its toll. Interestingly enough, however, the revenue passengers carried stood at 88.5 million in 2008, not a whole lot less from the 88.7 million carried in 2007.
