History/Incorporation/Organizers Southwest Airlines Company was launched in Dallas, Texas by Texas businessman Rollin King will air or Herb Kelleher in 1967 (Hoovers Company
Profiles, 2003). The original goal of Southwest was to be an intrastate airline that would link Dallas, Houston and San Antonio (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003).
From the start however, the upstart airline was trouble -- then-competitors Braniff and Texas International sued Southwest noting that the region did not need another airline (Hoovers Company
Profiles, 2003). The Texas Supreme Court however, rolled in Southwests favor; and in 1971, the company, renamed Southwest Airlines, made its first scheduled flight from Love Field, an in-city airport
near downtown Dallas (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003). Because the airline operated from capital of Field, Southwest adopted love as the theme of its
early promotions -- its drinks were "love potions," while peanuts were considered "love bites" (Hoovers Company Profiles, 2003). But when Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport opened in 1974, and the other
