Boeing 767, both going from Boston to Los Angeles, were hijacked and flown, only minutes apart, into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Given
this, then, are airline personnel, in particular airline attendants, safe in continuing flights into areas of known political turbulence? Many flights still continue into such hotspots as Southeast Asia as
well as South and Central America. Airline companies are knowingly placing their personnel in potential jeopardy each time the flight lands or takes off from a known trouble zone, and
one wonders if they are fully apprised of the concerns and the frequency of incidents in these areas. Central and South America because of their political upheaval are not
stable countries. The largest threats to airline attendants and cabin crews, flight crews and passengers occur when they must land to allow disembarkation and to refuel. During this time there
is little to no security on the runway, which is primitive at best. Unfortunately, crime is growing everywhere," says Goslin, a frequent business traveler to Latin America, "But Ive been
in some American cities that scare me more than Latin America"(Travelcom 2003). However, the data and the statistics do not share Goslins optimism. Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro are
among the most dangerous cities in Central America, with Buenos Aires, and Santiago being the safest(Travel Latin Am. 1999). Therefore, it depends on where the flights are required to land.
