each subsequent drama one is able to see themes, characterization, and plot become more complex and intricate. This collection, as well as the first, serves to make the case for Sophocles longevity. The first tale in the book revolves around Ajax, a classical hero during the Trojan War. Ajax is the beaten opponent in the Odyssey. He meets Odysseus in the underworld and they fight over the armor of Achilles. Ajax has the tragic flaw, much like Shakespeares Othello, of pride and arrogance. He is so certain that he should be awarded Achilles armor that when he is defeated he cannot stand the perceived shame. Ajax, in a last act of defiance, commits suicide. Because of his act his men refuse to bury him, but Odysseus, exhibiting nobleness of character encourages them to change their mind and to remember Ajax for the hero that he was. The next drama, The Women of Trachis, revolves around a heroine, instead of a hero. Deianeira, the wife of Hercules, is shamed and angry when Hercules returns from a great battle with a mistress on his arm. Unknown to Hercules, Deianeira has been keeping a small potion containing the blood of a Centaur that Hercules had killed earlier. She was told by the very Centaur as he lay dying that the blood, if given to Hercules, would keep him from ever wandering from her side. Of course, he has lied to Deianeira and the blood, instead of being an aphrodisiac, is poison. The irony, of course, is that she did get what she wanted: Hercules no longer wandered in his affections.
