as his occupation of Timbuktu. Songhay, a kingdom based in West Africa, was located on the river Niger, a safe haven to
where people fled to escape Mohammedan invasions from the northeast (Garvey, 2002). At the height of its power, Songhay expanded from the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the borders
of what was then Anglo-Egyptian Sudan (Garvey, 2002). Sonnie Ali, who was also known as Ali Kolon, began his career as a
soldier in Kakan Musas army (Garvey, 2002). As Kankan Musas army was repressive, Ali found himself fighting, more often than not, against his own people (Garvey, 2002). One day, he
swore he would take up arms against Musa to free his people (Garvey, 2002). After some careful planning Ali, along with his
brother Selmar Nar, rallied the Songhanese people around him and attacked Jenny, a major city in Songhay (Garvey, 2002). He went on to take city after city throughout the region,
driving the Kankan Musa out of the Songhay area (Garvey, 2002). Eventually, Ali found himself lord and master of Songhay. Yet Alis
reign was not necessarily a popular one (History Channel, 2003). Although a Muslim, he mistreated Islamic scholars (and put many of them to death) (History Channel, 2003). Meanwhile, in 1464,
Ali sent his army to capture Timbuktu, which was a valuable city at the time (History Channel, 2003). But he did not respect the intellectual life of Timbuktu, and disdained
it (History Channel, 2003). He tended to keep down the scholars as well as the priests with the result being that this group of individuals plotted against Ali (Garvey, 2002).
