alternatives and recommendations. For this exercise, well discuss the problem of "open borders" in the United States. When we talk about open borders, we mean that theyre not sufficiently manned,
so that many people can slip through from Mexico and Canada. On September 11, 2001, we saw first-hand what such porous borders can mean - basically it invites terrorism into
the country. Open borders have pretty much been a hallmark of the United States since the Founding Fathers drafted the constitution - and
even prior to that. During the 18th and 19th centuries, countless numbers sailed over from oppressed nations in Europe to take advantage of opportunities offered in the United States. Because
of this, America has been known - and continues to be known as - the land of opportunity, the place where anyone, who has enough ingenuity and foresight, can make
something of his or herself. But such a reputation also leads to problems - and these problems need to be examined and solved.
Problem The main problem with such abundance, however, is that everyone wants a piece of it - even if they have to break
laws to get it. There are no dearth of people who slip across the northern or southern borders of the United States; many are so desperate, they pay for such
travels with their lives. Even if these folks do make it into the U.S. and end up integrating themselves into the mainstream, theyre
considered "illegals," which means they can never become full-fledged citizens. And in some cases, these illegal immigrants end up taking resources from U.S. citizens who do pay taxes and who
