The trick to successful problem solving is to accept the fact that conflicts will happen and use those conflicts to drive the workforce toward the company goal. This tutorial will examine how the student should present the solving of organizational problems in the workplace. For purposes of this paper, we will use its Saturn Corp., the automobile manufacturer, as an example -- sad turn, in fact, was General Motors Corporations solution to survival in a market place consisting mainly of compact cars. GM did this by developing a team-oriented company well outside the GM fold, and creating a different type of product and retail strategy (Aaker, 1994). The student could easily stress here that it GM solved its problem of competition literally by developing a new company and then distancing it from the GM name. The student can stress innovations such as a manufacturing plant in Tennessee (instead of Detroit), a team approach to designing and marketing the car (in that marketing and manufacturing worked together from the concept, through the process and to completion), and that in building a brand name, promotion focused more on selling the company and its people rather than the car (Aaker, 1994). The student can also focus on how Saturn itself solved problems during its early days. One particular example that emphasize the quality culture of Saturn involves how a problem involving defective coolant was handled (Aaker, 1994). In this situation, recognizing that the coolant in question might have caused severe and irreparable damage to the cars, Saturn made the decision not to recycle the cars -- and this was representative of Saturns commitment to ...
