fact, he was quite the Athenian rebel of sorts, teaching against many of the widely held philosophical beliefs of the day. Given this, then, one of the greatest discourses that he has is his method of self-examination which he urges each individual to engage in. It is said that there is nothing so vast or uncharted as the human mind and soul. This largely undiscovered frontier was a source of constant contemplation by many of the classical philosophers, including Plato. The depths and heights of the human mind and soul, it would seem, are large enough to accommodate the contemplations of a good deal many philosophers. While it would seem that most of the argued about everything from the function of the soul to the perception of ones environment, it can be said that they would all agree that mankind is a constant source of amazement and discovery. On self-examination, then, he seems to be saying that each individual needs to disregard popular opinion unless that popular opinion can be proven true using reason. Self-examination begins with self-awareness. In the Crito he seems to be saying that unless one has proven the validity of the opinions offered, how would one know the truth. And, given this, how does a person even know if those opinions are really yours or the opinions of others which you have adopted as your own without testing them? The unexamined life, then, is worthless he seems to be saying. However, the weakness in this argument is that an educated person is wise enough to engage in regular self examination and that they will then know what they believe and why the believe it.
