but they were also comments on social conditions, attitudes, and ways of life. As such, then, human sociology could be studied through the various films that were produced prior to
the 1940s and the prevailing ideas could be discovered. In addition, it seems likely that the history of cinema, then, does not just include the element of entertainment, but a
history of human social theories. Emotional identification is an integral part of the successful movie experience, whether one is involved in the creation of the film, or simply enjoying the
movie. In team-like fashion the combination of script, characters, plot and theme give rise to a satisfying experience for the audience, one that not only evokes an emotional response, but
also leaves room for continued introspection due to some aspect of the movie. This emotional catharsis is what draws viewers to the theaters, and has been drawing them since the
first character burst onto the screen(Waller 2001, see also Neale 1979). Take for example the film which debuted in the 1930s called, Mr. Smith goes to Washington. Though this is
a thoroughly enjoyable movie with Jimmy Stewart as the perennial sensitive hero, it also shows the attitude of the times toward political figures. A sense of patriotism was still thriving,
and though it was assumed that there was corruption in the government, the optimism of the time suggested that it could be reversed or stopped. Consider Alfred Hitchcocks movie,
Vertigo. This whole movie is centered on one man and his inability to let go of an old love. The story, in brief, is about obsessive fears, and the redemptive
qualities of love. Most films however, offer the viewer an expected structure. The director juxtaposes the good with the evil, the pure with the twisted, and then, offers redemption at
