Six years and some billion-plus subscribers later, Facebook has moved well beyond the college community to become a force to be reckoned with, as have other social networking sites, such as YouTube, Twitter and MySpace and activities such as blogging. Furthermore, social networking sites arent just for socializing any more, either. Learning organizations are finding that social networking sites can have a positive impact on how their employees network and transfer knowledge. But what, exactly, is a learning organization? Many point to Peter Senge as the so-called "father" of the concept of the learning organization; it was Senge who first introduced the fact that organizations and their members regularly share knowledge between one another, and the organization that can tap into that pool of knowledge resource is an organization that can remain competitive in an ever-changing environment. Senges belief was also that the learning organization has the ability to move away from views and assumptions that characterize a more traditional, bureaucratic and hierarchical organization (Learning Organization, 2004). For Senge, the learning organization had five elements: Mental models, personal mastery, systems thinking, shared vision and team learning (Learning Organization, 2004). These days, a learning organization can be defined as one that has a flat, or horizontal, structure, and contains customer-directed teams (Learning Organization, 2004). The learning organization has "the collective ability to develop shared visions by capturing and exploiting employees willingness, commitment and curiosity" (Learning Organization, 2004).
