Ontario banned its employees from access to Facebook (Minken, 2007). Why? Two reasons: Derogatory comments about the government from employee-users and a decrease in workplace productivity (Minken, 2007). Interestingly enough,
employees were not banned from the less-popular MySpace (Minken, 2007). The city of Toronto followed suit about the Facebook ban (though Facebook
was allowed in the offices of the mayor and the citys 44 councilors) (Minken, 2007). The reason the city put forth was because "Facebook has little relevance to municipal work"
(Minken, 2007, p. 1). As of 2007, there were 21 million people worldwide who were Facebook "friends" (Minken, 2007). The chances are
pretty good that the number has gotten larger in the last three years. Originally started in 2004 to link Harvard students together, Facebook took off, with others logging on.
These days, Facebook, and its cousin MySpace, is all about re-connecting with old friends, finding new ones, and posting stuff on ones Wall (Facebook)
or MySpace site. Social media is just that - its social and its a way to pass along gossip, fun stuff and to even play games. Where else could a
suburban housewife from Connecticut and a bookish librarian from Amsterdam get together? Put both of them on a social media game such as Mafia Wars, and theres an instant link,
